Office Park

We used the rapid scalability of mass timber to create the largest, flattest office building in Portland while giving the entire 20-acre site back to the community.

Office-Park is a reaction to the ongoing “tallest building” epidemic. We sought to challenge the idea of scale in another way while investigating urban, technological, material, and experiential opportunities. The twenty-acre public ground plane is flexible and fully active and includes sports fields, a sculpture garden, museum, theaters, market hall, and the first public beach on the northern section of Portland’s waterfront.

The three-story office component of Office-Park embraces its bigness. Large continuous floor plates are interrupted by glazed voids and natural light is captured deep into the plate through sawtoothed clerestories. The project is a critical study of scale and a building’s urban impact on a growing city, and of the balance between an active public realm and the demands created by the future of office space.
